TITLETOWN BREWING WINS BIG AT THE GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL!
Titletown Brewing Co. recently attended the Great American Beer Festival and came back with the prestigious award of “Large Brewpub and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year.” Additionally, Titletown Brewing Co. also received two silver medals for two beers; Johnny Blood Red (Irish style red ale) & S.S.A. (smoke beer).
The Great American Beer Festival is an annual nationwide beer competition, pursuing the hefty goal of identifying the best beers, breweries and brewpubs in the United States. At this year’s competition, 1,552 breweries submitted entries, totaling to an overall amount of 6,647 different beers.
Brewmaster, David Oldenburg, attended the competition as a judge. In order to qualify, judges must have formal sensory training, past judging experience, industry recognition, knowledge of beer types, and a judging demeanor. To be fair, Oldenburg did not judge the categories in which his own beer creations were submitted.
“When the emcee announced Titletown Brewing Co. as large brewpub and my name as large brewpub brewer of the year, I was shocked,” said Oldenburg. “I’m humbled and very proud of the entire Titletown Brewing Co. team for all of the hard work that it took to get to this point.”
In 2014, we won a bronze medal for our Stammtisch Lager (Munich-style helles). At the 2010 GABF we claimed our first gold, for our “Boathouse Pilsner”, entered under Bohemian-Style Pilsner. We brewed this golden, hoppy, Bohemian-style lager from 100% Czech-grown floor-malted barley, spicy Saaz hops, clean, soft water, and the original pilsner yeast strain. Rich grainy malt notes support pronounced yet soft and rounded hop character; months of lagering create a smooth, clean palate.
In 2009, Titletown earned a bronze medal in the German-style Schwarzbier category for its Dark Helmet Schwartzbier. This German-style black lager has a rich aroma of coffee, chocolate, caramel, and toasted malt, medium-full body, and a roasty yet smooth finish. Brewmaster David Oldenburg created the recipe for this year-round offering during his homebrewing days and tweaked it during his career at Titletown.
In 2008, Titletown won a silver medal in the German-style altbier category for Railyard Ale, a Düsseldorf altbier characterized by assertive hop character, rich malt flavor, and a crisp, dry finish. Altbier (German for "old beer") is a hybrid style which combines the complexity of ale with the smooth palate of lager.
Great American Beer Festival Competition winners are selected by an international panel of brewing experts from an impressive field of approximately 3,000 entries and 500 breweries.
"The Great American Beer Festival is the premier judging event for the American craft beer industry," says Nancy Johnson, Festival Director. The Great American Beer Festival has been held every year since 1982 and is presented by the Brewers Association, a not-for- profit educational and trade association for craft brewers.
